Sunday Jones is a boy with a loving mother who protected him from a miserable and cruel father. Then his mother dies, leaving Sunday's father to make his life a misery. For the end of year concert, Sunday decides he will be a magician, The Great Orlando. On the night he impresses the audience (except his father) with his card tricks. For his final act, he disappears in a cloud of smoke, only his hat remains on the stage.

Product Information

Ben Brown writes children’s books, non-fiction and short stories for children and adults. Since 1992, he has been a publisher and writer, collaborating with illustrator Helen Taylor, on numerous publications. Ben Brown was awarded the Maori Writer’s Residency at the Michael King Writers’ Centre for 2011. He lives in Christchurch.



About the Illustrator
Helen Taylor is an award-winning children’s book illustrator and exhibiting artist with works in private
collections around New Zealand and overseas. She has been twice shortlisted for the LIANZA Children’s Book Awards and in 2006, won Best Picture Book in the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, with her book A Booming in the Night. Helen lives in a creaky old yellow cottage in the portside town of Lyttelton.
