Description

Featuring over 140 images covering more than 100 separate locations, and involving countless trips on foot, by sea and by air since the inception of the project in 1995, Deepest Fiordland ventures far from the stereotypes associated with Fiordland National Park, the largest World Heritage Area in New Zealand. I have attempted to convey my passion for this area by creating a comprehensive visual journey covering the entire extent of the park. As well as photographing each fiord. I have striven to capture the vast diversity of the park, from Puysegur Point in the south to Martins Bay in the north, from the sea cliffs at Long Point in the south, to the summit of Mount Tutoko and from the Tasman Sea in the west, to Lake Te Anau in the east." In addition to the landscape, the seasons and the weather, animal life and human activities all have a place in the book. John Hall-Jones's authoritative text complements the images and provides a valuable historical perspective. At heart, however, this is a book that depicts the park as it is today. It is a significant contribution to our knowledge and understanding of this most iconic of New Zealand's national parks.

Author description

Dr. Roger Wandless: Coming to New Zealand from the English Lakes District, Roger felt an immediate empathy with Fiordland. He first visited Fiordland National Park in 1994 and was so inspired by its grandeur that he seized every opportunity to visit it, whether by foot, boat or helicopter, to document the beauty and geographical diversity of the park. Roger works as a doctor in Invercargill, where he lives with his family. His previous publications, Forty-five degrees South and State highway 6, feature evocative panoramic images of the South Island of New Zealand. John Hall-Jones: A former ear, nose and throat specialist, John has written an impressive total of 31 historical books on Southern New Zealand, including several on Fiordland. His Fiordland Explored and Bluff Harbour both won the J.M Sherrard Award for regional history. Goldfields of the South were a finalist in the Sir James Wattie book awards and Fiords of Fiordland a finalist in the Montana book awards.
