Description

MAJOR NEW ZEALAND WORK, WELL REVIEWED BY TE PUNA MAGAZINE SHORT 2000 COPY PRINT RUN.

Trying to describe ÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂSong of the Old TidesÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂàto a friend, I gave up and said it had been six years in the making. Then I added, plus sixty more, for in essence it is all that I am.

ÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂSong of the Old TidesÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂàis of today, of our journey now, each and every one, young and old, Maori, Polynesian, European, Asian, and all who call this land home.

For it tells the story of this land that embraces us, touches my life and yours with the past that is always with us, and an eternity that walks with us every day.It is of the creation of the stars and the wonder of a world of light that gives birth to life.
It holds high the Mana of Aotearoa, the Spirit of this Land, and our place within it, for we do not stand apart. Everyday this Land speaks to us with a voice that honours the ancestors and shares their Promise.

It is of the Peace Makers, who carried Pounamu over the mountain passes, and the Warriors, and the Days of the Patu, the Days of the Muskets, and the Days of the Horse Soldiers. And it is about the Days of Healing.

It offers a unique journey into the spirit of this land, a journey with two wise elders, grandmother and grandfather, who carry the Promise that has never been set aside.

This book asks much of us, of all the peoples of this land, for it brings us close to histories that cry out to be healed. So there is pain in that and a call for understanding, a trail of tears that opens to a place of promise and hope. It is your journey as well as mine, and although it asks much, it does provide.

As this book unfolds I begin to understand I cannot carry it alone. We are all of its pages in different ways, all part of its voice and its promise.

So I stand before you, to share how we might bring this waka to the tides as one.
