A Practical Guide to the Study of Medicine - Letting the Dead Teach the Living

Author(s): Timothy David Koelmeyer

NZ Non Fiction

In this book, surgeon and pathologist Tim Koelmeyer, describes a system for the study of medicine that he developed during  decades of teaching medical students,  centered on post-mortem examinations conducted at the  School of Medicine of Auckland University. Attendance was voluntary. In time, the attendees christened these teaching sessions ‘The Breakfast Club’ and a legend was born.

In Part 1 of the book (ARE ALL DOCTORS JACKASSES?), a series of medical errors, some resulting in death, are recounted and reasons for these errors outlined. In Part 2  (A SCIENCE AND ART) , a definition of Medicine is given, and the ethics and philosophy  that underpin it are considered. Part 3 outlines, in three concluding chapters, the guide to the study of medicine.

Though primarily intended for medical students, paramedics and nurses, anyone with an interest in medicine will find the book of interest.

Note: Readers interested in the background to the present book may find interest in Tim Koelmeyer’s autobiography,  ‘A LIFE IN TWO LANDS’, available through Time Out Books.
