Douglas Lloyd Jenkins brings together in one volume a selection of key essays (28 in total) that have shaped 20th century New Zealand architecture and architectural thinking. The essays have traditionally appeared in journals and magazines, but with an increasing popular and scholarly interest in NZ architecural history, particularly as it pertains to the 20th century, there is considerable renewed interest in these difficult-to-locate works. Each decade is well represented, particularly the 1940s and 1950s with the influences of the Central European refugees such as Plischke, Porsolt, Kulka and Cacala and the renowned Group Architects, and the 1970s with the innovative philosophies of Peter Beaven, Miles Warren, Chris Brooke-White and David Mitchell, both in the areas of residential and commercial architecture. Author description

Douglas Lloyd Jenkins, author of the bestselling and widely acclaimed 'AT HOME: A Century of New Zealand Design' (2004), is one of New Zealand's most highly respected architecture and design writers. He is well known to New Zealanders through his columns in the New Zealand Listener, Home and Entertaining, and The New Zealand Herald, and as host of television's 'The Big Art Trip'. The TV series based on AT HOME, and fronted by Douglas, is due for viewing in September. He is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Design at UNITEC.
