Bugs by the Numbers

Author(s): Sharon Werner

Kids' Non-Fiction

Kids love bugs. They're creepy, crawly, slimy and slithery, and millions of them cover the Earth! Kids can't consider insects without thinking of them in huge numbers: armies of ants, 100-legged centipedes, thousands of migrating Monarch butterflies. Who better to capture this amazing array of insects than the creators of the award-winning Alphabeasties And Other Amazing Types. While the alphabeasties were comprised of letters, these incredible insects are ingeniously engineered out of numerals. Each entry includes fascinating numeric facts about its subject: An ant has 2 stomachs and 3 body parts, and it can lift 50 times its body weight!

Sharon Werner and Sarah Forss are graphic designers at the two-person design studio Werner Design Werks, Inc. in St. Paul, Minnesota. Sharon and Sarah love type, all types of type. Of course they have their favorites, like Clarendon and Franklin Gothic. They use type on all sorts of projects: identity, brochures, packaging, posters and books for clients that include Moet Hennessey, Target, Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day (which has seven different typefaces on one label!), Chronicle Books, Levi's and Melcher Media. Their studio has had remarkable international impact with their commitment to simplicity, honesty and practicality in design. This intelligent, straightforward approach to design has garnered WDW many graphic design awards as well as a place in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, Musee De La Poste, Victoria and Albert Museum, Musee des Arts Decoratifs and the Cooper Hewitt Museum.
