Lyttleton wrote over a dozen novels and some 250 short stories in the first half of the twentieth century, mostly narratives of romance and adventure set in the remote back country of New Zealand, Australia and Canada. She was, at that time, New Zealand's most widely read author in America, Europe and Australia, reaching millions of readers. Terry Sturm is professor of English at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and a leading critic and scholar of New Zealand and Australian writing. He edited The Oxford History of New Zealand Literature (1991, 1998) and was chairman of the New Zealand Literary Fund Advisory Committee and later the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council's Literature committee.
