Stories and where they come from-
a book for curious children
Adrienne Frater loves to write for children. Most stories in this collection have been broadcast by National Radio, published in the iconic School Journal or anthologised. Adrienne’s stories are characterised by their energy and quirky humour. But this is not just any collection. Each story is introduced by a letter addressed to the reader. As well as explaining where the story came from, the letters allow the reader to get to know the writer in a more personal way. This is a book that will appeal to budding writers as well as readers.

When I read my stories children often ask, “Is this person real?” or “Did this really happen?” When I read other peoples’ stories I ask the same questions. I guess I’m a curious reader, and maybe you are too. I’m particularly curious about the writer. “Are they in the story?” I wonder. “Where did they get their ideas from? How much of the story comes from their imagination and how much of it is true?”

Questions like this gave me the idea for this book. Why not publish a collection of my most popular children’s stories and explain where each one came from. This way, instead of the author being just a name on the page, I will become real.

As you meet my characters: in school, on a trolley derby track, on the stage, or on a beach rescuing stranded whales – I invite you to be curious too. Ask them where they came from. Ask them why they are here. Then step inside the story and enjoy.
